Growing Westerplatte Clematis

Like all clematis, it prefers cool roots while its head is in full sun or part shade. It thrives in alkaline to neutral, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Water well after planting and keep soil moist during dry weather for the first few growing seasons.

Support by tying into wires or trellis.

History & Trivia

Bred in 1994 by Brother Stefan Franczak in Poland. The official start of World War 2 is September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, and the first event of that invasion was the battle of Westerplatte, a peninsula in the Bay of GdaEsk (Danzig in those days). The Polish garrison there was expected to be overrun within half a day, but they held out for a little over six, by which time Warsaw was under direct assault.
