Features

  • Clusters of purple flowers on 2m tall stems
  • Herbaceous perennial
  • Flowers July - October
  • Easy to grow in full sun
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit
  • RHS Plants for Pollinators

Growing Verbena

Thrives in full sun in any well-drained soil. If happy, it self-seeds around the place to create a purple haze and most people leave the stalks in place during winter both for some interest and to let the seeds spread naturally.

It may not be fully hardy in a cold winter in more northerly situations, where it can be treated as a self-seeding annual.

Garden Design Ideas

Verbena bonariensis has become a stalwart of the garden in recent years, both in cottage-style borders and more formal schemes. Producing a lovely, butterfly-attracting haze of violet flowers on slender stems, it can be used to produce height without bulk and works well as a fantastic companion plant. Pair with the likes of Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm', cosmos, Japanese anemone, the lovely salvia May Night and Nicotiana sylvestris.

History & Trivia

This South American species is named after Buenos Aires. The European Vervain is Verbena officinalis.
