White Candle Japanese Spindle Hedge Plants

White Candle Japanese Spindle Hedge Plants

White Candle Japanese Spindle Hedge Plants

A charming little shrub for ground cover, edging borders, or patio pots, the showy white new shoots and leaves could be mistaken for flowers from a distance. Evergreen in all but the harshest winters. To 75m

Browse all our evergreen and native Euonymus varieties.

All of our hedge plants are measured by their height in centimetres above the ground (the pots aren't measured).

Features

  • New leaves are creamy white, maturing to deep green by the end of the summer
  • Grows on the coast, poor soil, chalk
  • To 75m

Growing Euonymus japonicus Paloma Blanca

Any well drained soil in sun or partial shade. Drought tolerant when established. Good for exposed coastal locations.

It's hardy and evergreen pretty much throughout Britain, but in a harsher than average Scottish winter it might drop its leaves.

As with any variegated plant, prune out pure green-leaved stems if and when they appear.

Spacing an evergreen Spindle hedge: 3 plants per metre, 33 centimetres apart, is ideal.

History & Trivia

The species is native to Japan and the Eastern coast of Asia. This cultivar was bred by Van Lankveld nursery in Elsendorp, Holland, registration code Lankveld03.

Paloma blanca means "white dove" in Spanish, but for reasons best known to a marketing department somewhere, it is often labelled "white candle" in the UK.
