Night Queen: A Dark Red Ball Dahlia at the Back of the Border

Night Queen is a ball dahlia in deep red that reads as almost black in low light. The tight, spiralling form builds each 10cm flower into a neat globe, and the dark colour gives it a moody, jewel-like quality. At 120cm it's taller than most ball dahlias, suited to the back of a border where the dark globes float above lighter flowers in front.

The stems are strong, the flowers last well in water, and the plant produces them freely from July to November. It needs staking at this height.

Night Queen in a Scheme

Dark globes need lighter neighbours. Plant with Boom Boom White (white ball, 100cm) for a dark-and-light pairing in matching forms. Golden Sceptre (yellow ball, 90cm in front) lifts the dark tones with warmth. Silver foliage or pale grasses stop the scheme from becoming a shadow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Night Queen compare to Dark Spirit?

Dark Spirit (decorative, 90cm, 7cm) is darker, more compact, and spherical but not technically a ball. Night Queen (ball, 120cm, 10cm) is taller with the tight spiral structure of a true ball dahlia. Both are dark. Different forms, different heights.

Will Night Queen grow in a pot?

At 120cm it's too tall for most containers. Grow in a border with staking. For a dark ball dahlia for pots, Dark Spirit at 90cm is a better fit. Our container guide covers what works.

Is Night Queen good for cutting?

Very. The 10cm ball form is the perfect scale for bouquets, and the deep colour adds drama to any arrangement. Full growing advice in our dahlia growing guide.
