'Merton Pride' a superb English eating pear with melting, smooth, sweet and very fruity flesh. The pears turn from green to yellow when ripe. Some years they'll be covered in a fine russet down, other years hardly any.

The tree isn't the heaviest cropper but each pear is quite large and utterly delicious

History & Trivia

This tree was bred at the John Innes Horticultural Institute in 1941 when it was in Merton – then part of Surrey, now South London.
It was crossed from Glou Morceau and Double Williams, which was a sport of Williams Bon Chretien.
It was originally called Merton Favourite and was renamed in 1957.

The John Innes Horticultural Institute was founded in 1910 with the fortune left by John Innes after his death in 1904.
The famous John Innes compost formulas, made in the 1930's, are used across the world.
