Gallery Art Nouveau: Pink-to-Purple on a Plant Half a Metre Tall

Gallery Art Nouveau produces surprisingly large flowers for such a compact plant. The blooms are up to 15cm across, a luminous gradient that runs from light pink at the outer petals to deep purple towards the centre. On a plant that stops at 50cm tall, that's a generous, almost theatrical display.

Part of the Gallery series bred by Verwer for containers and border fronts, Art Nouveau holds the RHS AGM. The two-tone colour makes it the most dramatic of the seven Gallery varieties. It flowers from July to November and needs no staking.

The blooms last well if cut, though the short, branching stems make it better suited to small posies than tall arrangements. In the garden, it's a border-front plant or a pot plant, and it fills both roles well.

Art Nouveau with Neighbours

The pink-to-purple gradient works alongside other Gallery dahlias or with taller varieties behind. Try it in front of Ambition (magenta-purple semi-cactus, 100cm) for a purple scheme that runs from compact border front to full-sized mid-border. Gallery Art Fair (white) at the same height provides a calming break between louder colours. Salvia 'Amistad' and low Heuchera are natural companions.

Why Ashridge?

Our dahlia tubers are Dutch first-class quality, imported direct and hand-graded. We discard undersized tubers so you get a clump with viable eyes, ready to grow. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gallery Art Nouveau the most colourful of the Gallery series?

The most dramatic, certainly. The pink-to-purple gradient is more complex than the single-colour varieties like Art Fair (white) or Art Deco (orange). If you want a compact dahlia that catches the eye, this is the one.

What size pot does Art Nouveau need?

A pot of 20 to 25cm across with rich compost will work well. Feed fortnightly from June. At 50cm tall with no staking needed, it's genuinely easy in a container. Our container guide has more detail.

Does Gallery Art Nouveau need deadheading?

Yes, like all dahlias. Remove spent flowers regularly and the plant will keep producing new buds. Stop deadheading and it redirects energy into seed production. Full seasonal care is in our dahlia growing guide.
