Gallery Art Deco: The Fiery One in the Gallery Series

The Gallery series was bred in the Netherlands by Verwer specifically for pots and border fronts. All seven varieties are compact, all are prolific, and a Dutch breeder named the entire range after art movements and Old Masters. Probably the only time Picasso and van Gogh have shared a border without arguing.

Art Deco is the boldest. The flowers are a rich, warm orange with deep red undersides that flash as the petals move, creating a two-tone effect that earns its name. At 10cm across on a 50cm plant, the blooms are full-sized on a half-sized dahlia. It holds the RHS AGM, confirming it performs as well as it looks.

In a pot or at the front of a sunny border, Art Deco needs no staking. Feed fortnightly from June, deadhead regularly, and it'll produce flowers from July right through to November.

Art Deco in a Pot or Border

Art Deco sizzles alongside other warm-toned compact dahlias. Plant with Gallery Vincent (peachy-orange, same height) for a warm pair. For contrast, Gallery Art Fair (white with chartreuse centres) cools the scheme. In a larger border, Dark Spirit (near-black, 90cm behind) provides dramatic depth. Antirrhinum and dwarf Helenium are natural seasonal companions.

Why Ashridge?

Our dahlia tubers are Dutch first-class quality, imported direct and hand-graded. We discard undersized tubers so you get a clump with viable eyes, ready to grow. Delivered by next-day courier from March, with our one-year plant guarantee, Feefo Platinum Service Award, and human support from the team in Somerset. Browse the complete dahlia collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all the Gallery dahlias compact?

Yes. The entire Gallery series was bred for containers and border fronts. All seven varieties are under 50cm tall. They don't need staking, they're prolific flowerers, and they're the best dahlia option if space is limited. The series includes: Art Deco (orange), Art Fair (white), Art Nouveau (pink-to-purple), Bellini (pink-white), Leonardo (pastel pink), Pablo (yellow-peach), and Vincent (peachy-orange).

Is Gallery Art Deco good for cutting?

The blooms last well in water, but the stems are short and branched due to the compact habit. For a small table arrangement or a posy, it works fine. For tall vase arrangements, taller varieties like Preference or Cornel are better suited.

What size pot does Art Deco need?

At 50cm tall, a pot of 20 to 25cm across is enough. Use rich compost, feed fortnightly from June, and water regularly. It's one of the few dahlias that genuinely thrives in a modest-sized container. Our dahlias in pots guide covers container growing in detail.
