Burlesca: A Pompon Dahlia in Three Colours at Once
Burlesca is a pompon dahlia with an unusual colour trick: each tiny 5cm bloom blends apricot, plum and yellow in shifting proportions. The outer petals tend towards plum, the inner ones towards apricot and yellow, so every flower looks like a miniature sunset. No two are identical.
At 100cm with strong stems and a 60cm spread, it's taller than most pompons. The compact flowers bob charmingly in a breeze without damage, and the multi-coloured blooms give the plant more visual weight than a single-colour pompon. It flowers freely from July to November.
Where to Plant Burlesca
The multi-tone colour mixes well with warm schemes. Plant alongside Cornel (deep maroon ball, 120cm behind) for a pairing where the apricot tones lift the dark red. Golden Sceptre (yellow ball, 90cm) picks up the yellow element. Sylvia (warm orange ball with brown stems, 80cm) echoes the apricot in a different form.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Burlesca a pompon or a ball dahlia?
Pompon. The flowers are around 5cm across, right at the pompon/ball boundary. The tight, globular form is the same for both types. Our dahlia types guide explains the classification.
Will Burlesca grow in a pot?
At 100cm it's manageable in a large container (at least 30cm across). The small flowers don't make it top-heavy. Feed fortnightly from June. Our container guide has more.
Is Burlesca good for cutting?
The pompon scale is perfect for small arrangements and posies. The stems are good and the multi-coloured blooms add interest. Cut only fully open flowers. Full growing advice in our dahlia growing guide.
